The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is located in the heart of the protected area of the Petrified Forest. It was founded in 1994 for the study, research, promotion and protection of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.
A visit to the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is an unforgettabled experience. Unique fossils from the Petrified Forest, the natural processes that led to its creation and the Aegean’s geohistorical development are presented in modern facilities.
A seismic table that simulates large and destructive earthquakes provides the museum’s visitors with a realistic experience of seismic tremors, and knowledge needed to understand the phenomenon and the preparation for the event of an earthquake.
The museum plays an essential role in the cultural, economical and social development of the area. International conferences, exhibitions, lectures, screenings and various events have been conducted in its facilities. The summer cultural events of the “Festival of the Earth” and also the Agrotourism Festival are organized successfully each year. A variety of educational programs for school groups and students from Greece and abroad are implemented throughtout the year.
The Museum is the management body of Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark and collaborates with the UNESCO Global Geoparks, the European Geoparks Network, scientific institutions, museums, universities and research centers from Greece and abroad.
